Gay but not Merry

The close of the last century could be called the “gay” nineties. During those years the homosexual movement made great strides in acceptance. Gays have successfully achieved recognition as a minority worthy of not just normal protection as citizens but of special defense as a persecuted minority. This occurred in spite of the fact that homosexuality is an activity and not a quality like skin color, ethnicity, sex, or place of origin. If a sexual activity qualifies one as a member of a minority deserving special protection then perhaps sadomasochists, polygamists, and prostitutes who feel persecuted should apply for protected status.

Homosexuals have invaded the educational system under the pretext of safe sex and tolerance programs. Television programs picture them like the neighbor next door.  The Supreme Court decided recently that private sexual activity is a constitutional right which laws may not prohibit. Canada recognizes homosexual marriages, and some states in the US may follow suit. The Episcopal Church has elected an openly homosexual bishop. Certain legal jurisdictions have equated condemnation or criticism of homosexuals with hate speech and some have levied fines against those who call it an abomination. We are almost inclined to congratulate ourselves that another prejudice against a minority has been overcome and we have all become more civilized.

There are two immovable facts that spoil this idyllic picture. The first is the long history of condemnation of homosexual practice in most world religions, especially the severe condemnations in the Bible. To be sure there are scholars aplenty who advise us that the words of the Bible on homosexuality should not be taken literally. The Bible was not, they maintain, speaking of the kind of homosexuality that we have now and the writers did not have our contemporary psychological understanding of sexual orientation. They argue that we must not rely on the Bible alone, but on the lead of the Spirit. Catholics are surprised to learn from Protestants that the Bible is not the sole rule of faith after four centuries of hearing otherwise from them. Also for those who believe that the Bible was inspired by God it is disconcerting to learn that what the Spirit thought about homosexuality for 40 centuries is not what he thinks about it now. And apparently he has commissioned homosexuals to notify us of his change of mind.

Whatever success homosexual propagandists have in deflecting the moral judgment of the Scriptures or natural law, there is a second stubborn fact that prevents homosexuals from living happily ever after and that is nature. Unlike scripture and moral reasoning, it is not subject to reinterpretation and revisionism. Nature punishes homosexual activity mercilessly. Man pardons sometimes, but nature never. Nature makes homosexual activity not a lifestyle but a deathstyle.

AIDS has killed more men in the US than six Vietnam wars combined and 83% of all cases in the US are white homosexual men. AIDS is only one of the problems of gays. Homosexuals who are 1-2% of the population have 50% of the nation’s syphilis cases. 78% of them are afflicted with at least one STD. They account for half the cases of gonorrhea of the throat and intestinal infections. They have abnormally high rates of hepatitis A, B, and C, herpes, enteric infections, cancers and tumors.

Homosexuals impose a tremendous tax burden on the rest of the population. In Wisconsin $104,000 in tax funds is spent on each death resulting from AIDS, but only $568 is spent on each death resulting from certain cancers. Also in Wisconsin heart disease during 1997 accounted for 17,300 deaths and cancer for 10,500 while AIDS accounted for only 80 deaths. If AIDS had been funded at the same rate as heart disease and strokes AIDS funding per death would have been $0.06. The lives of AIDS patients are not less precious than that of those who die from other causes, but they are not more precious either. AIDS is caused by willful immoral sexual behavior and is easily avoided. How does one justify preferential treatment for a disease that anyone can prevent? Even if sexual orientation is congenital, something far from proven, it does not have to be given expression. It remains a choice. Gay activists argue that homosexual activity does not spread AIDS, viruses do. That is like arguing that guns do not kill people, bullets do. If AIDS is the modern plague homosexuals are the carriers.

Apart from the cost of homosexuality to society it produces, not surprisingly, great loss of human life. Gays who die from AIDS have a median life span of 39. Gays who die from other causes have median lifespans of 42. By contrast unmarried men in general live to 57 and married men to 75. Nearly half the homosexual and bisexual men aged 20 today will not reach their 65th birthday. Gays have a 40% shorter lifespan than heterosexuals.

“The evidence [of health hazards of homosexuality] is so overwhelming that even if all moral judgments and religious biases are set aside, homosexuality—by its very nature—cannot play a part in a healthy society” (National Association for Search and Therapy of Homosexuality, September 24, 2002)

In spite of these facts the homosexual lifestyle has many defenders who are driven more by ideology than facts. They claim that sexual prejudice against gays is responsible for the spread of AIDS. It is not homophobia that spreads AIDS but misguided activism and sexual activity by gays. Activists argue that AIDS must not be used to reinforce notions of good and bad behavior. Why not speak about something that causes so much misery and death? Furthering the homosexual agenda is shortening lives. Presenting homosexuality as normal is encouraging self-destructive behavior. Unfortunately this is done under normally respectable auspices such as the Center for Disease Control.

Gay propagandists say that the answer to control of AIDS is to teach safe sex. Millions of dollars were spent on condoms and education on their use during the Clinton Administration by the latex warriors, Jocelyn Elders and Donna Shalala. It has not stopped increase of AIDS cases. Perhaps narcissistic sexual indulgence makes gays poor students or maybe the effectiveness of condoms is overrated. What is needed is not more latex but more steel in one’s character.

Sex education programs in many schools present homosexuality as normal. Children should not be directed to a disease-prone, life-shortening lifestyle. Neither should Boy Scouts be subjected to known homosexuals. Homosexual activists claim that most child molesters are heterosexual males. Since 98% of the population is heterosexual one can expect that they will produce the greater number of cases. In one study of child abuse homosexuals were responsible for 32% of the cases. Heterosexual males had 19.8 victims per molester while homosexuals had 150 per molester. Although the ideologically driven elite media suppressed the fact 93% of child abuse cases perpetrated by Catholic clergy were homosexual in nature. Homosexuals not only excel in disease and death, but also in child abuse.

If revelation did not tell us the evils of homosexuality our negative experience should have done so. Homosexual orientation—but not homosexual deeds—deserves our sympathy because being “gay” is not much fun.
